How to Check If Your Business Name Is Already Taken in India

You’ve picked a name you love. Before you print visiting cards, buy a domain or pay for a signboard, you need to check business name availability in India. A name that’s free on Instagram can still be a registered company, or a trademark owned by someone else in your industry. Here is a six-step check you can run in about an hour, mostly for free. If you’re still choosing a name, start with our guide to choosing a brand name and logo that builds trust.

How to Check Business Name Availability in India: 6 Steps

1. Search the name on Google

Search your name in quotes, then again with your city and business type, for example “Nashik Laptop Repair”. Look at the first two pages of results, plus Google Maps and Instagram. If a business in your field and region already uses the same or a very similar name, customers will confuse you, even if nothing legal blocks you.

2. Check company and LLP names on the MCA portal

If you plan to register a private limited company or LLP, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs lets you search existing names for free. On the MCA portal, look under MCA Services for the company/LLP name check. Treat this as a preliminary check: the Registrar still reviews your name during the formal application, and the portal’s process and fees can change, so follow the current steps there.

A sole proprietorship doesn’t register a name with the MCA, but that doesn’t make the name safe. An existing company or trademark can still conflict with it.

3. Search the trademark register

This is the step most small businesses skip. A trademark is a legal right to a name or logo within a category of goods or services, and it can matter even if no company with that name exists. India’s trademark registry offers a free public search, and a basic search needs no login.

Search your exact name first, then spelling variants and sounds-like versions. Trademark checks in India give a lot of weight to how names sound, so a small spelling change rarely helps. If you already have a logo, the portal also lets you search by logo features. A clear result isn’t a legal guarantee, so for a brand you plan to grow, ask a trademark professional to confirm.

4. Check the domain

Search your name as a .com and a .in domain on any domain registrar. If the .com belongs to an active business in your field, think twice, because customers who mistype will land on their site. Adding your city can work, but a clean match is far easier to remember. For help choosing one, see our guide on how to choose a domain name.

5. Check social media handles

Search the name on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn and X. Ideally you want the same handle everywhere, since inconsistent handles confuse customers and weaken recall. If the exact handle is gone, adding your city or “official” is a common workaround. Then follow our social media profile setup checklis.

6. Secure what you can, quickly

If the name clears all five checks, move fast. Buy the domain, claim the handles, and start your registration or trademark process. Domains and handles are first come, first served, so don’t wait weeks after deciding.

What If Your Name Is Already Taken?

Don’t squeeze in a minor spelling change. Add something distinctive, such as a word that describes what you do, or choose a different name altogether. A name that’s clearly different is safer than a clever variation of someone else’s.
